Character Creation: Time & Temp

Playing a one-shot tonight. Not of this game, but of Perseverant, which doesn't have character creation rules as I'm looking at them for purposes of this project.

The Game: Time & Temp
The Publisher: Dig a Thousand Holes Publishing
Degree of Familiarity: None, just read it.
Books Required: Just the one.

So, there are a few RPGs out there with the conceit of "you're playing employees or agents of a time-preserving force," including Timewatch and TimeZero. This one, however, merges corporate culture with that paradigm, and has the folks getting zapped around in time be temps, because temps don't have enough of a temporal footprint to matter and are therefore less likely to cause paradox. Having been a temp for a fairly good period of my employment history, I can confirm this.

However, I really struggled with including this game in my chargen project at all, because this is the extent of the character creation section:

Not exactly extensive. Plus I hate making resumes. But, as I often say to Michelle when a movie we both hate comes up in the other project, society has rules. So I'll find a free online resume builder and go from there.

Need to conceptualize a bit first, though. Temps can be from any era, and I kinda want to make someone modern, so I'll say that my hapless temp graduated from college in September 1974 (he had one lousy science class to make up and he had to do it in summer, so he couldn't graduate in spring), right after Nixon resigned.

Brent Riker, Jr. was a college Republican and a business major, and was right along with Nixon, defended him to his friends...and then everything kinda fell apart, Nixon resigned, and Brent had to eat some crow. Except, true to form for people of any political stripe, he didn't, because admitting he was wrong was difficult, and he wound up graduating and looking for work, only to find that a lot of his contacts had dried up (I think maybe he went to school in the DC area). And then he got drunk one night, struck up a convo with a guy in a bar named Todd (the guy, not the bar), and wound up getting recruited by Marigold Staffing. What the hell, it's better than nothing.

Let's figure that Brent worked as an intern/assistant at a financial firm (at the business factory, as it were, Vincent Adultman), but mostly did gofer-type work. Every job he had before that was your basic fast food type of situation, and he doesn't put those on his resume. He can type pretty well, and he's got a minor in history, which is actually applicable to his current position.

Brent was pretty shaken up by Watergate, but even more shaken up to learn about the history of the future and realize that Nixon's transgressions had far-reaching, horrific political ramifications. Brent can't fix them, obviously, but he does struggle with the temptation to leave past-Brent a note saying "Vote Humphrey."

That'll do it!
