Character Creation: Agon

Man, COVID sucks. Someone should do something about this.

The Game: Agon
The Publisher: Evil Hat Productions
Degree of Familiarity: None
Books Required: Just the one

As I may have mentioned, I like games that are focused (though just at present I'm finding I'm enjoying the trad "GM makes everything up" kind of vibe a lot; basically my preferences for a lot of things are "why not both?"). Agon is such a game - you're playing a bunch of heroes in a Greek mythological kind of setting, sailing between islands, getting into adventures, building your legends, and sooner or later you're either going to return home or die/otherwise meet your fate.

Actually, it's not a million miles from Atlantis: The Second Age insofar as it's concerned with the legacy of the characters, but it's a squillion times simpler. Also although it's written with the Greek gods in mind, there's nothing that says you couldn't use whatever pantheon you wanted (or make one up), and I don't think it'd be terribly hard.

So let's make a hero! This is pretty quick, actually. First thing we do is pick an Epithet. This is the key thing that boost me in conflict. Hmm. We just rewatched Raya & The Last Dragon last night, and I'm thinking about Tong, the warrior from Spine (huge, tough, tries to be vicious but can't quite manage it). I think that my Epithet will be Oak-Skinned. I start with a d6 there.

Now we need a name (which also starts at d6). My guy is named Sithas (there's a handy list in the book).

Lineage! I can be a mortal hero or a demigod. I don't see Sithas as a demigod, actually. Let's say that (like Tong) he's from an island in a very cold clime, but not so frigid that there's no plant life - in fact, it's called the Frozen Forest. That makes me Oak-Skinned Sithas, scion of the Frozen Forest (I could have named a specific ancestor or something, but I like that better).

Favored Domain! The choices are Arts & Oration, Blood & Valor, Craft & Reason, and Resolve & Spirit. One gets a d8, the rest get a d6. I think Blood & Valor is pretty obviously my forte.

Now, who's my Honored God? Assuming that we're going with the Greek pantheon, I think it's gotta be Ares. I also think this might be a source of conflict at some point. I get marks of Divine Favor with three other Gods, though, so I'll take one with Artemis, one with Demeter, and one with Zeus.

Style! This is basically how you'd recognize Sithas. Sithas is tall and broad, with the long, thick, black hair done in the braids his people are known for. He wears a brown tunic and carries a big wooden club, hewn from the mighty trees of his homeland.

And...actually that's it, because the next two sections are Bonds (I get 2 bonds with each other hero, but it's just me) and Leadership (which would decide who's the leader on the first island) and both are whole-group things. So, um, on to blood and glory!
