Character Creation: One HONK Before Midnight

After an utterly awful and exhausting couple of days, coupled with our nation's recent leap off the precipice of lawlessness and corruption, it's time for a silly game - and what's sillier than a goose?

One HONK Before Midnight, as is implied by the title, has the players taking on the roles of geese and doing chaos (rather, khaos, since HONK is an acronym). System-wise, it's roll some d6s and take the highest, but it's meant to be pretty low-stakes, beer n' pretzels. I dig it. I picked it as my first hard-copy game after my completion of my PDF games because it's a spiral-bound book and my little green sticker won't stay on. 

Goose creation is pretty quick; actually the annoying part is that the character sheet, such as it is, is a png file rather than a PDF so I'm just doing it in an online photo editor.

Step One: Choose a Goose Breed. I'll roll for it, thanks. A roll of 5 makes me a Golden Goose, so my stats are Heroism 2, Observation 3, Nimbleness 0, Khaos 1 (see, HONK). 

Step Two: Choose a Perk. Again, I shall roll. Loaded Dice - if I roll only 1 die, I can treat a 3 as a 4. That basically means if I'm rolling on Khaos I have a slightly better chance of success. Sure, I'll take it.

Step Three: Choose a Hidden Ability. These are more powerful (some of them, some of them are pretty weak), but you can only ever use it once. I can...Make it Rain! I can cause a short, sharp, sudden rainstorm, even indoors. That's pretty cool.

My goose is named Squooshy. Squooshy is always in the water - not uncommon for a goose - but he's an amazing swimmer and diver. He knows in his heart that can he call water if he really needs to, and the villagers have taken to blaming him for particularly violent rainstorms. He doesn't think he's really responsible...but if he were, that'd be amazing. Especially when you've just hung out the washing to dry! KHAOS! GOOSE ON THE LOOSE!
